Makey Makey Workshop

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Spells Writing Lab hosted a lively Makey Makey workshop, where students combined creativity, technology, and teamwork to bring their games to life. The session built on the participants’ earlier work in storyboarding and designing games in Gamestar Mechanic, serving as an exciting extension of their projects.

For the facilitator, it was the first large-scale workshop, and there was some initial concern about how the introduction would flow into hands-on work. But those nerves quickly disappeared. After a short explanation of the Makey Makey kit and its parts, the students became highly attentive. A quick demonstration—showing how a simple high five could make a CANABALT character jump—set off an energetic start. Soon, groups of students gathered at workstations, eagerly experimenting and tinkering.

During the workshop, the young makers tested various inputs for their games, from fruits and candy to everyday objects. As the session progressed, they began developing more complex controllers inspired by other video games. Among the most impressive creations was a collaborative controller that required three participants to physically connect and work together to complete a level. Other projects included imaginative foil wearables that transformed into tools for space-themed adventures.

The workshop not only showcased the inventive possibilities of Makey Makey but also highlighted the power of play, collaboration, and curiosity. For many of the students, it was a joyful introduction to turning everyday items into interactive technology.
